Certification Areas and Requirements
Choosing your certification area is an important step in the certification process and can sometimes be overwhelming. If you’re unsure, contact us and let us help you determine the best certification area for you.
Educational Requirements
Elementary, Secondary, Special Education, and Bilingual Education
Candidates must have a conferred Bachelor’s degree earned from an accredited institution of higher education that is recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).
Your grade point average (GPA) is determined in one of the following two ways: 2.5 on all coursework (includes all courses from all institutions) OR 2.75 in last 60 semester hours of completed coursework.
Please Note: Any applicant who does not meet the 2.5 GPA requirement must provide a passing score on a TExES Pre-Admission Content Test (PACT) in the area of teaching certification to be considered for admission.
Career and Technical Education Certification Areas
CTE certification areas require varying educational levels ranging from High School diploma, Associate, or Bachelor’s degree.
Content Area Proficiency
Each certification area has specific methods in which candidates are required to demonstrate their content area proficiency. Select a program from the list below to view the specific requirements for the different certification areas.
Applicant testing history will be considered during the application process. If a candidate has five or more failed testing attempts for an individual TExES exam matching the certification area for which they have applied, or a combined ten TExES test failures overall, then the candidate does not meet the admission standards for ECP.
