Certification Areas and Requirements

Educational Requirements

Elementary, Secondary, Special Education, and Accelerated Secondary

Candidates must have a conferred Bachelor’s degree earned from an accredited institution of higher education that is recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).

Your grade point average (GPA) is determined in one of the following two ways: 2.5 on all coursework (includes all courses from all institutions) OR 2.75 in last 60 semester hours of completed coursework. 

Please Note: Any applicant who does not meet the 2.5 GPA requirement must provide a passing score on a TExES Pre-Admission Content Test (PACT) in the area of teaching certification to be considered for admission.

Career and Technical Education Certification Areas

CTE certification areas require varying educational levels ranging from High School diploma, Associate, or Bachelor’s degree.

    • Five years of full-time wage-earning experience within the past ten years in one or more approved occupations for which instruction is offered
    • Licensure, certification, or registration by a nationally recognized agency or successful performance on NOCTI exam is required by end of program
    • For Cosmetology and Barbering, a current instructor’s license is required upon application
    Special Application Instructions:
    1. Complete the Region 13 ECP application and pay the online application fee *all fees are non-refundable
    2. Submit official transcripts
    3. Submit a Statement of Qualifications Form (SOQ)
    4. Submit copy of licensure, certification, or registration by a nationally recognized agency or successful performance on NOCTI exam is required by end of program

    Trades & Industrial Education 6-12 (Associate Degree)

    Trades & Industrial Education 6-12 (Bachelor's Degree)

    Content Area Proficiency and Certification-Related Licensure/Work Experience:
    • Bachelor’s Degree (from an accredited institution of higher education) with coursework documented on transcript related to certification area
    • Two years of full-time wage-earning experience within the past ten years in one or more approved occupations for which instruction is offered. Up to 18 months of the wage-earning experience can be met through a formal documented internship.
    • Licensure, certification, or registration by a nationally recognized agency or successful performance on NOCTI exam is required by end of program
    • For Cosmetology and Barbering, a current instructor’s license is required upon application
    Special Application Instructions:
    1. Complete the Region 13 ECP application and pay the online application fee *all fees are non-refundable
    2. Submit official transcripts from ALL institutions of higher education attended
    3. Submit a Statement of Qualifications form (SOQ)

    Health Science 6-12 (Associate Degree)

    Content Area Proficiency and Certification-Related Licensure/Work Experience:
    • Associate Degree (from an accredited institution of higher education) with coursework documented on transcript related to certification area
    • Current medical or health care licensure, certification, or registration by nationally recognized agency
    • Two years of full-time wage-earning experience utilizing medical or health care license, certification, or registration.
    Special Application Instructions:
    1. Complete the Region 13 ECP application and pay the online application fee *all fees are non-refundable
    2. Submit a Statement of Qualifications form (SOQ), current medical or health licensure
    3. Submit all official transcripts

    Marketing 6-12 (Bachelor's Degree)

    Content Area Proficiency and Certification-Related Licensure/Work Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree with 6 semester hours in Marketing related content documented on transcript with minimum GPA of 2.5
    • Two years of full time wage earning work experience required

    Agricultural, Food, and Natural Resources 6-12 (Bachelor's Degree)

    Applicant must have Bachelor’s degree with 24 semester hours (with suggested 12 upper level) in Ag related content documented on transcript with minimum GPA of 2.5

    OR

    Applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree and have passed the Pre-Admission Content Test (PACT)

    Business and Finance 6-12 (Bachelor's Degree)

    Content Area Proficiency:

    Applicant must have Bachelor’s degree with minimum GPA of 2.5 and have passed the Pre-Admission Content Test (PACT)

    OR

    Applicant can be exempt from the PACT exam if they hold a Master’s degree in Business, Finance, or Accounting with at least 9 graduate-level hours in Finance/Accounting and 9 graduate-level hours in Business on their college transcript.

    Special Application Instructions:
    1. Complete the Region 13 ECP application and pay the online application fee *all fees are non-refundable
    2. Submit all official transcripts
    3. Take PACT if necessary and submit PACT scores

    Family and Consumer Sciences: Composite 6-12 (Bachelor's Degree)

    Content Area Proficiency:

    Applicant must have Bachelor’s degree with 24 semester hours (with suggested 12 upper level) in FCS Composite related content documented on transcript with minimum GPA of 2.5
